Sugar ants, commonly known as ghost ants, are a frequent sight in Florida homes and gardens. These small ants are attracted to sugary substances, which makes them a common nuisance in kitchens and food storage areas. Their translucent, pale yellow to light brown bodies and almost invisible appearance earned them the nickname “ghost ants.”
Sugar ants are quite small, ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 mm in length, with a distinctive transparent or pale body. Their tiny size and ghost-like appearance make them hard to spot, especially when they’re foraging in homes. Unlike white-footed ants, which are darker with yellowish feet, sugar ants are much lighter and blend easily into their surroundings.
Sugar ants prefer sweet foods, but they may also be drawn to greasy substances. You may spot them in kitchens, pantries, or areas where sugary foods have been left out.

– Trails of small, translucent ants leading to food sources like sugar, sweets, or greasy leftovers
– Ants foraging around sinks, countertops, or food storage areas
– Nests located in wall voids, baseboards, or cracks, often close to moisture sources like kitchens or bathrooms
Effective sugar ant control begins with eliminating their food sources and sealing any entry points into your home. Clean up sugary spills immediately, store food in airtight containers, and seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and plumbing.
Baiting is one of the most effective ways to control sugar ants. Using slow-acting baits ensures the ants carry the poison back to their nest, eliminating the entire colony. Liquid baits such as Optigard Ant Gel, Advion Ant Gel or Intice Thiquid Ant Bait work particularly well for sugar ants, as they are attracted to sweet substances.
It’s important to avoid using contact sprays or repellents, as these only kill visible ants without addressing the source of the infestation. The ants will simply relocate and continue to breed.
