Pharaoh ants are small, invasive ants commonly found in Florida. They are notorious for being a significant pest in both residential and commercial buildings. These ants are light yellow to reddish-brown in color and measure around 1/16 of an inch long. Their small size and ability to form massive colonies make them particularly challenging to control.
Pharaoh ants thrive in warm, humid environments, making Florida an ideal location for them to establish their colonies. They often build nests inside walls, behind baseboards, in electrical outlets, and in other small, hard-to-reach areas.
Pharaoh ants are easily identified by their pale yellow or reddish-brown color and tiny size. Their colonies consist of multiple queens, which makes them unique compared to many other ant species. This ability to form large, multi-queen colonies allows them to reproduce rapidly and spread throughout a building.
Pharaoh ants are known for creating long trails as they forage for food. They are attracted to sweets, proteins, and greasy foods, making kitchens, pantries, and food storage areas common spots for infestations. Because they can establish colonies in hidden areas, spotting one or two ants is usually a sign that a much larger infestation exists nearby.
Pharaoh ant control can be particularly challenging due to their nesting habits and rapid reproduction. Attempting to eliminate these ants with common household sprays may worsen the problem by causing the colony to split, a process known as “budding,” which leads to the formation of multiple colonies.
The most effective method for controlling pharaoh ants is through the strategic use of ant baits. These ants will carry the bait back to their colony, where it will be shared among the workers and queens, eventually leading to the collapse of the entire colony. For successful treatment, it’s important to use a combination of both liquid and granular baits designed to attract pharaoh ants.
