Pavement ants are a common ant species found throughout Florida, often seen building their nests in cracks in sidewalks, driveways, or beneath paving stones. These ants are small, typically dark brown or black, and get their name from their tendency to nest under pavement. Though they are not harmful to humans, their presence can become a nuisance, especially when they enter homes in search of food.
Pavement ants are relatively easy to identify due to their size and behavior. They are about 1/8 inch long and range in color from dark brown to black. A distinctive feature of pavement ants is the narrow grooves or ridges that run along their head and thorax. These ants have two nodes on their petiole (the narrow waist connecting the thorax and abdomen) and antennae with 12 segments, ending in a three-segmented club. You’ll often see them foraging in lines along pavements, sidewalks, and even indoors when looking for food.
Pavement ants get their name because they often build their nests under pavements, driveways, sidewalks, and stone patios. However, they are also known to nest inside structures, particularly in the winter months when they seek warmth and shelter. Pavement ants are not directly dangerous to humans as they do not sting, and their bites are generally harmless. They are particularly attracted to sugary foods, but they will also eat grease, meat, and small seeds.
